This course presents a comprehensive “deep-dive” into the legal aspects of the use of force including the development of the law, the Reasonable Officer standard. the range of reasonableness, and societal pressures on the Reasonable Officer standard. This course is an advanced study of the law and makes extensive use of case studies.

The historical and present development of the law governing the use of force by law enforcement officers.
The concept and fallacies of the Reasonable Officer standard.
Determining the legal requirements for different degrees of force.

Qualified Immunity and the “Perfect Storm.”
